Dr. Jim McDermott. MSc, Doc.Soc Sci

Jim McDermott is a Social Scientist, a presentation skills consultant, cartoonist, artist, and entertainer.  He lives in rural Leicester and is married with a grown up and expanding family.  He has trekked to many of the worlds exciting places including Machu Picchu in Peru, the jungle and desert in Rajasthan, Northern India, all the way down to the Dead Sea and all the way up to Everest Base Camp.  In June 2015 he was a crew member on Sail Training vessel Tenacious which retraced the voyages of ships from the UK to the Normandy ‘D’ Day Landing Beaches – the crew landed on Gold Beach on 6 June 2015 to commemorate the 1944 landings.

Jim worked as an Associate Tutor and MSC Supervisor at the Centre for Labour Market Studies (CLMS) and at the School of Management the University of Leicester from 2007 to early 2018.  His main research interests lie in the area of transitions within society, perspectives on military society, learning styles and career development.  Jim’s doctoral dissertation studies those who have successfully made the transition from military to civilian society.  He has completed peer reviews for articles submitted to Journal of Youth Studies and: St Antony’s International Review (University of Oxford).   Currently (2018) a member of the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) Veterans and Families Research Hub (VFRH) Advisory Group

He spent the first 25 years of his working life in the British Army mostly overseas and then worked in the electronics industry as the National Training Manager for the Key Group of Companies developing new business in bank clearing systems and computer based training. He moved on to take up the post of Head of Training at The Institute of Packaging and developed a detailed knowledge of the food and drink, pharmaceutical packaging and publishing industries and their associated human resource and training needs. He was appointed the chairman of the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) Education Group in 1993 and travelled extensively overseas for this organization, the DTI and the British Council promoting packaging technology to developing countries. He completed both his MSc and his Doctoral studies at the University of Leicester

Jim provides top class coaching for those nervous about presenting to an audience as well as presenting cartoon workshops as a confidence-building tool.
